I know nothing about winter solstice/Yule celebrations. What do you do for them? Are there particular traditions you keep?

I've added some things since having children. For the most part, any spells I do, I do alone, unless it's like a protection or asking the Goddess to bless us or something.
We have our own stories, like the Holly and Oak king. It's a celebration of the light returning to us, so lots of candles (only now it's pretty limited because little kids and fire are a bad mix!) We find a Yule log and decorate it, and burn it (starting it with a piece of last year's log if you have one)
I usually come up with some crafts to do, especially things like putting peanut butter and seeds on pinecones, anything that helps give back to the earth and her creatures.
We give few gifts, most are handmade. Instead, we choose a charity each year to donate to, thus giving back to others.

I don't know, for me, it's about giving back of the bounty we have enjoyed all year-and realizing that even if things weren't great, we are much more fortunate than others, and it's our responsibility to help out.

That's kind of a pat answer, but I'm still working on how to incorporate children, and make it a fun, magical time for them, without succumbing to consumerism and Santa and nice/naughty/elf on the shelf things, kwim?

Totally opposite of what we do, but we celebrate Christmas with Santa intertwined with our Christian beliefs, so I would imagine our celebrations would be very different. :)

I always find it interesting how differently people celebrate the holidays. I do think what you do about giving back to the earth and to others is very lovely. We try to do the same, especially around the holidays.
